Elizabeth Bishop Art Exhibitions June - August 2011
2011 is the centenary of the birth of Elizabeth Bishop, a Pulitzer Prize winning writer, who lived in Great Village during her formative years.  Much of her writing is based on this Nova Scotia experience.

The Elizabeth Bishop Society and the Truro Art
’s Society are co-sponsoring two Elizabeth Bishop Art Exhibitions.  These exhibitions will run concurrently this summer.  They will open at the McCarthy Hall in Truro on Tuesday evening July 5, 2011, and remain their until August 17. Then the two exhibitions will be moved to the Mason’s Hall in Great Village for the Elizabeth Bishop Festival on August 19 to 21, 2011.

One exhibition is entitled
“Elizabeth Bishop’s Great Village.”  Artists are invited to enter one or two works of art that capture Great Village either now or in 1911 to 1916 when Elizabeth Bishop lived in Great Village.   Artists can come to Great Village anytime to soak up inspiration for visual art that depicts this village.  There was a special Great Village Painting weekend on June 4 and 5, 2011.

The other exhibition is entitled
“In the Village.” One of Elizabeth’s Bishop’s most famous short stories, “In the Village,” is set in Great Village.  As background to this exhibition, artist’s are encouraged to listen to the entire 55 minute story on the Media page on the Elizabeth Bishop Society of Nova Scotia Website http://elizabethbishopns.org/media  Then artists are encouraged to visually recreate their own personal “Where I came from” art piece. This exhibition mirrors the “In the Village” writing competition. One submission per artist, that interprets the artist’s own life or past, will be accepted and displayed at  McCarthy Hall and at the Elizabeth Bishop Arts Festival.

In addition, several will be chosen to be photographed and reproduced in a book that will be published in 2012. This book will feature the prize winning stories of the
‘In the Village” Writing Competition and some of the art from the “In the Village” visual art exhibition.

Artist’s are required to submit a digital copy (good quality, at least 300dpi) of their art work with the registration form for this exhibition. The cd should be labled on the outside with the artist’s name, the title of the art work, the size, and the medium, plus a contact email address.

Works for both exhibitions must be framed (or sides of canvas painted) and wired ready for hanging.

Submissions will be accepted from 9 to 12 am July, 4, 2011 in the lobby of McCarthy Hall of the Nova Scotia Community College on Arthur St. in Truro The official opening of the exhibitions will be July 5th.

The exhibitions will be open daily until August 17, 2011.  On August 18, the exhibition will be moved to Great Village Nova Scotia for the Elizabeth Bishop Centenary Festival August 19, 20 and 21.  Pickup of works is August 22 at the Masonic Hall, Great Village, from 10 until noon, or August 23
at McCathy Hall,Truro, from 10 until noon. Artists are advised to carry their own insurance. If the artist wishes, labels of works can include a sale price set by the artist.  Should the work sell at the exhibition, the Elizabeth Bishop Society and the Truro Art’s Society would split a commission of 25% of the sale price.
